Many people go throughout their whole lives and never think about the power of the words they speak. What about you? Do you ever think about the impact of your words? I lived a good portion of my life and never gave it a thought. God is our Creator and the Creator of the universe. The first chapter of Genesis tells the story of creation. There we see the phrase, “God said…..and it was so,” approximately ten times, depending on the translation.
We Are Made In His Image
God had created the universe and all of the vegetation and animals. Now the time had come for a caretaker to watch over all He had made. Genesis 1:26-27 tells us that we are made in His image. We are not God, but we are supposed to imitate Him. “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children.” Eph. 5:1 (NLT). When we become a follower of Jesus Christ, the same Spirit of God, who was there at creation (Gen. 1:2), and spoke life into being, comes to live in us. “And when you believed in Christ, He identified you as His own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom He promised long ago.” Eph. 1:13 (NLT). There is only one Holy Spirit. Therefore, the very same Spirit who lived in Jesus while He was on the earth is the very same Spirit who lives in us. Words are important to God, so they should be important to us as well.
The Power Of Words
The Bible is full of Scriptures that teach us about the importance and power of words…His and ours. Words can create or they can tear down. Words are impactful. The words others have spoken over us, and the words we have spoken over ourselves shape how we view the world around us. Words help shape our self-image. God gave mankind a voice and the ability to use language. He expects us to use them both wisely. We should use our mouths to speak hope and encouragement. They should reflect the love of the Father. We will continue to study what the Bible says about the creative power of words.
Step Into Change
Listen to yourself this week. Pay attention to your words and then ask yourself the following questions: Did I use my words to encourage myself or condemn myself? Did my words help or hurt others?
Prayer: Father, I want to imitate You and become more like You. I ask You to remind me to speak words that are pleasing to You.
